Why Double Cleansing Is Important and How To Do It Properly
We have heard a lot recently about double cleansing but what exactly is it? Is it really necessary? Does it benefit your skin and how should you double cleanse properly?
The skincare experts at Martin and Phelps Beauty Salon in Cheltenham explain why double cleansing will transform your skin.
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is exactly as it sounds; it basically means washing your face twice. Double cleansing is especially important if you wear make-up and SPF on a daily basis, because the purpose of the first wash is to remove the products that sit on top of the skin. It also helps lift any impurities and grime from the day that have settled on the skin.
The second wash will cleanse the skin more deeply and effectively, for a thorough cleanse.
The Benefits of Double Cleansing
The main benefit of double cleansing is that it gets rid of traces of make-up, dirt and impurities on the skin, giving your face a really thorough cleanse. Bacteria is more thoroughly removed from the face, preventing blackouts and dullness.
By cleansing more deeply, your skin is prepared for the rest of your skincare regime, allowing the products applied afterwards to work more effectively and helping to save money as you wont need to use as much product.
How To Double Cleanse
The traditional way to double cleanse is to start with an oil-based cleanser for the removing make-up stage, and a water-based cleanser for the second cleanse. You may use the same cleanser for both stages if you wish, the cleansing itself is the most important thing.
Take your first cleanser and use as directed to remove any make up or SPF, then rinse your face with lukewarm water. Using a flannel to wash off the cleanser helps to give a more thorough cleanse and also acts as a gentle exfoliator. Pat your skin, leaving it slightly damp in preparation for your next cleanse.
Apply your second choice of cleanser, massaging over the face with your fingertips and again rinse off with lukewarm water. Pat skin dry, still leaving it slightly damp, and then proceed with the rest of your skincare routine.
Tips For Mature Skin
For more mature skin, we would recommend using a gentle cleanser rather than abrasive ones, as too much washing can dry out mature skin quickly.
Treat your grown-up skin with respect: there’s no need to literally scrub your face and never use hot water - only lukewarm water. You also only need to do a double cleanse once a day, after wearing make-up and SPF, so we'd recommend restricting your double cleanse to your evening routine, to prevent your skin from becoming too dry.
